Aristonic. ἡ διπλῆ, ὅτι ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν εἰς τρία διαιρεῖ, ἠῶ τὴν πρωίαν, μεσημβρίαν πᾶν τὸ μέσον τῆς ἡμέρας, δείλην, ὅτε ἐνδεῖ ἡ τοῦ ἡλίου ἕλη, τουτέστιν ἡ αὐγή, ὥσπερ καὶ τὴν νύκτα εἰς τρία, ἑσπέραν, ἀμολγόν, ἑώαν. Wahrscheinlicher als die hier gegebene Etymologie ist die von Buttmann Lexil. 2, 191 aufgestellte, nach welcher δείλη nur eine andere Form von εἵλη ist, wie διώκω ἰώκω, δαήμων δαίμων αἵμων; der Nachmittag ist recht eigentlich die Zeit der Sonnenwärme. Ueber den Accent von δείλη vgl. Scholl. Herodian. Iliad. 19, 26. – Bei den Folgenden findet man unterschieden δείλη πρωΐα u. ὀψία, Her. 8, 6 u. 7, 167, erstere, nach Moeris, nach 12 Uhr Mittags ( μετὰ ἕκτην ὥραν), letztere, nach B. A. p. 54, ἀμφὶ τὴν ἐννάτην καὶ δεκάτην, 3–4 Uhr Nachmittags, vgl. Thuc. 8, 26; Dem. 27, 9. Bei den Att., bes. Sp., ist es der späte Nachmittag, selbst der Abend, Plat. defin. 411 b, δείλη ἡμέρας τελευτή, nach Hesych. δείλη ὀψία ἡ περὶ δύσιν ἡλίου. So περὶ δείλην, gegen Abend, Thuc. 4, 103; ὀψίαν 3, 74; περὶ δείλην ἑσπέραν Hdn. 3, 12, 16; δείλαν allein Theocr. 10, 5; μέχρι δείλης ἐξ ἑωϑινοῠ Xen. Hell. 1, 1, 3. – Synes. sagt auch δείλη ἑῴα, der Morgen.
